courthouse: the area first inhabited by Cherokees was signed over to surveyor Andrew Pickens in a 1777 treaty; first called the Pendleton district, with divisions Pickens and Anderson (the former for the surveyor Andrew Pickens, the latter for Pickens’ surveying partner, General Robert Anderson).
